Happy New Year from Fat Gold!

We’ve been making olive oil since 2017, and along the way, we’ve done all sorts of things.

Here’s one thing we’ve never done, until now: HAVE A BIG SALE!

A dozen or more Fat Gold tins shimmering in a wonderful pile, with the words BIG FAT GOLD SALE appearing above them

There’s a specific inspiration for this sale, which we’ll explain below. But let’s cover the important stuff first:

You get the message: we want to move these last few cases of oil OUT of our warehouse, into your pantry!

You might treat this as an opportunity for a tremendous stock-up, or to acquire Fat Gold specifically for projects that previously felt too profligate. Olive oil cake? Olive oil-washed gin?? (You’ll find plenty of possibilities in our Recipe Stockpile.)

Or, you might try Fat Gold for the first time. We know our product isn’t cheap, so we’re happy to be able to offer this discount. High-quality California extra virgin olive oil, $25/tin, as long as our dwindling supply holds out:

You know our motto: Fat Gold is not for hoarding! This is a chance to get some tasty oil at a great price, and perhaps pour it a little more freely.

Here’s the inspiration for this sale.

In our part of the San Francisco Bay Area, there’s a legendary establishment called Market Hall. It’s a European-style food hall, packed with pantry staples and fancy treats alike. There’s a huge deli case and a bakery. They stock fancy tea and fancier cookies, fresh pasta and just-made pizza dough balls, an amazing selection of cheese… they’ve got everything. (That includes olive oil, of course: Fat Gold is on the shelves at Market Hall. This is, for us, a source of significant pride.)

One of Market Hall’s flagship offerings is tinned fish from Conservas Ortiz, a renowned Spanish brand. The white tuna is especially great—a cult favorite—and accordingly high-priced. This is luxury fish.

Once a year, in the summertime, Market Hall holds a great Ortiz sale, slashing prices, piling the red tins high on tables in the center of the store, making these wonderful, munificent structures:

Many of their customers wait all year for this sale. When summer comes, they pounce, stocking up for a whole season or more.

It’s a good deal, and more than that, it’s just FUN. Market Hall has turned a tuna sale into a tradition; almost a little holiday.

This is our vision for the Big Fat Gold Sale. Every year in January, whatever oil remains from the previous harvest will go on sale, to clear the way for the fresh stuff.

Please join us for the first of many!

That’s it for this Field Report. Our annual subscribers received the first oil from the new Fat Gold mill in December, and we have heard rave reviews. We can’t wait to share the rest of our production with you over the course of the year ahead.

In the meantime: the sale is on!
